Getting Back To You, While The Kids Get Back To School

September can sometimes leave us feeling a bit glum; but we must remember that fall festivities are around the corner. As summer recedes, be comforted in knowing that it’s not only a season, but also a state of mind. In fact, you can bring that bright and sunny disposition all the way through the “ber” months.

As the kids head back to school and you begin to get back into a familiar routine, it’s important to plan a self-care regime that you can stick to. When the kids were home all day, I’m certain it was easy to become overwhelmed forcing you to put “me time” on hold. Managing your children’s calendars with activities, friend meetups, summer camp, etc, probably left you feeling exhausted and downright crazed. But, now that our wonderful teachers are sharing in their care during the day, it's time to take a breath and focus on you!

I challenge you to try something new that helps you feel renewed and rejuvenated. Whether you want to try out a yoga class or join a book club, now is the perfect time to do it. Going on a weekly hike, getting your nails done, joining the gym or taking a painting class are all ways to give yourself the “you time” you deserve. Between work and family, the days seem to slip away without taking a second to breathe. So, as we get back to school and back to reality, it’s time to put yourself first so that you can be the best version of you!

If you are having a hard time getting ideas on what to do with your newfound “me time”, here are some great ideas to help you get started.

Challenge Your Brain

Join a book club, start a new hobby or work on learning a new skill. Self care can include challenging your brain just as much as getting pampered. If the idea of gaining a new experience or knowledge gets you going, then I say go for it!

Treat and Indulge

So, maybe you want to spoil yourself every now and then. If getting a manicure and pedicure, massage or facial sounds dreamy, then make that appointment. Taking a couple of hours to indulge in something that makes you feel more beautiful is the ultimate treat!

Meditate and Relax

Yoga was never meant to be a form of exercise, rather a spiritual journey. Lucky for us it is a form of meditation along with a rock solid workout. Any form of meditation and relaxation techniques are a great way to show yourself some tender loving care.

Do the “Write” Thing

Journaling, blogging, even writing a review of your favorite store or restaurant is a great way to free your mind. Writing as a form of self care is the perfect way to challenge your intellect while also helping you release any negative thoughts. If you love to write, this is definitely the thing for you. However, if writing isn’t your thing, you may just find that this is the door that can lead you on an amazing path of self-discovery.

So, as the chaos of the school year begins, take a moment and enjoy the (dare I say) little taste of freedom that fall brings with it. In my opinion, being your best “for yourself’ is just as important as being your best for everyone else.

I must leave you with these "FUN" recipes to begin the season of pumpkin, spice and cider:

Important dates to remember this month:

September 8 - National Literacy Day

Do you need a better reason to join a book club?

September 11 - 9/11 Remembrance

September 13 - National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

Okay, this couldn’t come at a better time. Let those kids take over the kitchen (and make dinner!!), while you indulge in whatever self care act tickles your fancy.

September 27 - National Love Note Day

Insert heart eye emojis here. How wonderful is it to tell someone how you feel about them. Make someone’s day today with some sweet words…and maybe you will get some in return.
